Afalau Cymru/ Apples of Wales

‘The stories Carwyn tells are enlightening, intriguing and unique to our nation’

(Will Ritchie)

‘Gwledd’

(Gerallt Pennant)

Carwyn’s first books, ‘Apples of Wales’ and ‘Afalau Cymru’, were published in autumn 2018 and spent several months in the Welsh bestseller lists. They tell the hitherto untold story of apple growing in Wales, a story that extends from prehistory into the twentieth century.
The book is available to buy in bookshops all over Wales, on amazon or direct from the publishers here:

Orchards as pasture

But telling the history of Welsh apples is one thing; growing a future where apples, orchards and cider become once again a cornerstone of Welsh food and farming in a climate-uncertain world is another.

Carwyn has helped spearhead the national heritage orchard initiative at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, which safeguards over 40 rediscovered or conserved varieties of apple from all over Wales.

What is now needed is data. The more widely grown these varieties are, and the more data we can collect on their properties, the better placed we will be to ensure a resilient fruit future.
